Project overview

Creating Elevator Access Without Taking Interior Space

The owner wanted to add an elevator to an existing residence, but there was one major limitation: there was no practical space available inside the house for an elevator shaft.

Installing the elevator internally would have required sacrificing valuable living space and making more extensive changes to the existing layout.

During site evaluation, the balcony area was identified as a more practical location because it provided enough vertical space for the elevator while allowing the main interior layout of the house to remain largely intact.

ElevPh Builders Corporation developed the installation around this exterior location and coordinated the required civil works so the elevator could travel between three levels.

The main challenge

No Available Space Inside the Existing House

Adding an elevator to an existing residence is different from designing one into a new building. The house was already complete and usable, and no suitable interior area could accommodate a conventional shaft without significantly affecting existing rooms and circulation.

  • Serve all required floors
  • Avoid taking up valuable interior space
  • Integrate with the existing residence
  • Provide practical access at each level

The solution

Use the Balcony as the Elevator Location

Instead of forcing an elevator into the existing interior layout, ElevPh positioned the elevator along the balcony area of the residence.

This allowed the elevator to rise externally through the building levels while connecting back into the house through the balcony access points.

The outdoor configuration provided an effective way to introduce vertical access to an existing home without requiring a large internal elevator shaft.

This project demonstrates how an outdoor home elevator can be considered when interior space is limited but suitable exterior access is available.

Civil works

Civil Adaptation Through the Existing Floors

Because the elevator needed to serve three levels, the existing balcony and floor areas required civil modification so the elevator could travel vertically through the structure.

Civil works were carried out at the 2nd and 3rd-floor levels to create the necessary openings for the elevator path.

This allowed the elevator installation to pass through the upper balcony levels while maintaining access to the residence at the required stops.

Cabin design

A Bright Glass-Enclosed Cabin for an Outdoor Setting

The completed cabin uses transparent panels that admit natural light and visually connect the elevator with its outdoor surroundings.

Natural Light & Interior FinishThe transparent enclosure allows daylight and surrounding views to remain part of the elevator experience.

The glass-enclosed design also helps reduce the visual heaviness that a fully enclosed solid cabin could create when installed along an existing balcony.

Project outcome

Vertical Access Without Sacrificing Interior Living Space

The completed project provided the owner with a three-stop residential elevator while avoiding the need to carve out a new elevator shaft inside the existing house.

By using the balcony area and carrying out the required civil openings through the upper levels, the elevator was integrated into the existing residence without consuming valuable interior floor area.

The result is a practical example of how an outdoor elevator can solve access requirements in an existing home where interior installation space is limited.

Customer guidance

Can an Elevator Be Installed Outside an Existing House?

In some existing homes, an outdoor elevator may be a practical alternative when there is insufficient interior space for a conventional shaft.

Feasibility depends on the available exterior space, access to required floors, structural conditions, weather exposure, drainage, available electrical supply, landing configuration and required civil works.

A site inspection is required before deciding whether an outdoor installation is appropriate.

Residential elevator assessment

No Space for an Elevator Inside Your Home?

ElevPh Builders Corporation can inspect the existing residence and evaluate whether an indoor, outdoor or custom elevator arrangement is practical for the available space.

For an initial assessment, provide the project location, number of floors, available balcony or exterior space and photographs of the proposed installation area.
